This course incorporates four main areas of training:

Skill Development
Psychomotor Skill Instruction
Cognitive Principles of Human Performance  
Adult Learning Practices
Successful completion of this 80- hour train-the-trainer course will prepare and certify each student in the instruction, administration, and logistical aspects of the required 24-Hour In-service De- Escalation Training curriculum established in WAC 139.11.

The participant will learn tactics, actions, and communication methods that de-escalate situations when appropriate. This is accomplished in order to reduce the likelihood of injury to all parties involved, avoid escalating situations that may lead to violence, and avoid unnecessarily placing officers in situations that require or the use of force, the participant will correctly:

List and describe the Five Overarching Principles of Patrol Tactics
Describe the concept of Contact and Cover
Describe Perceptual Narrowing and its possible effects
List and describe the L.E.E.D. model
Define Emotional Intelligence and list the domains involved
Discuss tourniquet application and occlusive bandage application
List and describe the Behavioral Influence Stairwell Model
List and explain TEB model
List the components of a learning goal
List the components of a performance objective
Define De-escalation
Define Good Faith  
Define Skill Mapping
Define and explain C.R.E.S.T.
To maximize teaching ability and learning potential, the participant will learn and understand the basic principles of information reception and processing styles, motor performance, and motor learning as they relate to skill instruction. The participant will:

List the components of learning goals.  
List the components of performance objectives
Discuss the Inverted U theory and its ramifications.  
To ensure the teaching ability of the potential instructor, the participant will learn and understand the basic principles of psychomotor skill instruction and evaluation. Given a group of individuals, the participant will:

Properly instruct assigned Applied Skill Practices to include specific drills that are unique to the assigned skills.

To maintain a high degree of professionalism, the officer/participant will understand the role of the state-trained Patrol Tactics instructor. During training, the participant will identify and discuss:

The responsibility of the patrol tactics instructor regarding his/her agency.
The patrol tactics instructor's commitment and responsibilities regarding the criminal justice training commission.
The intervals for teaching and retraining to maintain certification.

This class covers material beyond the material provided in FTO/PTO class and is a highly recommended for both veteran and new FTO/PTO's.

Audience: Class is only open to active law enforcement officers.  It is strongly encouraged that officers meet the suggested prerequisites.  

Dress Code:  For security reasons, while on the WSCJTC campus are encouraged to wear their agency logo shirt/uniform and have their agency ID badge visible. See Resources Required.

Cancelation Policy: Cancellation Policy: Deadline to cancel is 7 days prior to class. There is a $50 no show or late cancellation fee. Cancellations are done by the agency's training manager in the WSCJTC Acadis Portal

Prerequisites
Upload the required Letter of Recommendation for the student. A sample of the letter can be found in Acadis on the class description.

1) Letter MUST be on agency letterhead

2) Letter MUST be signed when attached

3) Letter MUST be saved as a PDF document

4) Required to uploaded at time of registration to avoid delays.

5) If not, letter MUST BE uploaded after registration in the student's registration.
Agencies have four (4) weeks before the start of class to add the letter or student will NOT be enrolled.

6) In extreme situations, other arrangements regarding the letter must be made prior to registration by emailing appliedskills@cjtc.wa.gov.  Program staff will give agency additional information at the time.
