Brief Description: Police Training Officer (PTO Reno/COPS Model)

Full Description: This highly interactive 40-hour course presents the PTO model (sometimes called the Reno or COPS model) to field trainers engaged in training those who have recently completed the BLEA or Equivalency Academy. This program can be adapted for corrections, but the materials used in this class will be law enforcement related. It begins with an introduction to problem-based learning, which underlies the PTO program. Classes have a maximum of 25 students.

Topics include:

• The composition and components of the PTO program
• Adult learning theories, principles, and styles
• Emotional Intelligence
• Use and evaluation of journaling
• Duties and responsibilities of program personnel
• Use of teaching and evaluation tools and learning activities

Recruit training in this model focuses on the new peace officer's learning capacity and problem-solving skills as opposed to his or her rote performance capabilities, helping them to better apply their academic knowledge.

Audience: Employment as a field trainer.

Pre-Course Work: Yes. Pre-course work must be completed before the first day of class.  It will be sent out via email to accepted students at enrollment into the class.

Dress Code:  For security reasons, while on the WSCJTC campus are encouraged to wear their agency logo shirt/uniform and have their agency ID badge visible.

Class Times:  0900-1800 for the four (4) 8-hour days of instruction.  Pre-Course work is 8 hours.

Cancelation Policy: Cancellation Policy: Deadline to cancel is 7 days prior to class. There is a $75 no show or late cancellation fee. Cancellations of registrations  are done by the agency's training manager in the WSCJTC Acadis Portal.

Training Dates: 06/24/2024 - 06/27/2024

Prerequisites: I confirm that the student I'm enrolling is required to complete 8 hours of pre-course work assignments for Police Training Officer (PTO) before the first day of class.

This work will include an exam to be taken in the WSCJTC Acadis Portal. Exam MUST be completed by the Friday before the start of class, otherwise the student will NOT be able to attend.
