Full Description
Xylazine is an animal tranquilizer that has been found in communities across the United States. Some communities, like Philadelphia, are finding the drug in as much as 90% of their street fentanyl drug supply, while others are finding it much more infrequently. PAARI (Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative) staff will give a brief overview of xylazine and then cover
the following topics:
1. How the presence of xylazine can change the opioid overdose response
2. Focus group results from individuals who use xylazine, and clinicians who serve that population
3. Drug checking and drug testing - How to find out if there is xylazine in your community
4. Identifying xylazine wounds and basic wound care for xylazine related wounds
5. Possible community interventions to address the emerging threat of xylazine

The Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative (PAARI) provides training, strategic guidance, support, and resources to help law enforcement agencies nationwide create non-arrest pathways to treatment and recovery.
